'The Wading Pond' in Limited Edition Giclée Print by Michelle Morris
An enchanting scene that features a couple of magnificent egrets in their breeding plumage, this beautiful artwork is enhanced by stunning lotus flowers on the foreground and graceful wisteria cascading above them in the background.
The lotus plant is said to adapt to grow in flood plains of slow-moving rivers and delta areas, dropping hundreds and thousands of seeds every year to the bottom of the pond. Some sprout right away, others eaten by wildlife and the rest remain dormant for an extensive period. The oldest recorded lotus germination from seed is 1,300 years old, recovered from a dry lakebed in north-eastern China. No wonder the Chinese regard the lotus as a symbol of longevity, with the white and pink ones seen as meaning purity and devotion.
The egret is one of the most favoured subjects by Chinese artists, being fond of the bird’s slender and graceful presence in their art. They also symbolise purity, long life, strength and endurance. Similar feelings exist in Japan with the addition of the egret representing nobility, devotion and a graceful spirit.
Originally measuring 39cm by 52cm, this has been one of my largest paintings on Japanese masa rice paper using Japanesque acrylgouache. I extremely enjoyed in particular, observing how the natural fibres reacted with the paint and water as I tried to learn and apply a few nihonga techniques. This particular washi paper I used is made in the Awagami factory, a sixth-generation family run paper mill in Japan. Made from traditional fibres kozo and gampi, these types of papers are also made from bamboo, cotton and hemp.
Now in archival print, only 75 prints of this artwork shall be made.
